Yellow jackets are the most aggressive stinging pest in our region. They often nest underground or inside wall voids, and they become more aggressive and more visible in late summer and early fall as colonies reach their largest size.

Paper wasps build the umbrella shaped, open comb nests you’ll spot under eaves, porch ceilings, and railings. They’re generally less aggressive than yellow jackets, but they will defend a nest if it’s disturbed.

Bald faced hornets aren’t a true hornet at all, they’re actually a large, aggressive type of yellow jacket. They build the large, gray, football shaped paper nests you’ll see hanging in trees or on the sides of structures, and they’re especially active in late summer.
